How to play Mendicot
4, 6 or 8 players in two teams. Partners sit alternately, so every other seat is on your team. With 4 players you use all 52 cards (13 each); with 6 or 8 the 2s come out, leaving 8 or 6 cards each.
The goal: capture the tens
A team that wins 3 or 4 tens in its tricks wins the hand. If the tens split 2–2, the team with more tricks wins. Taking all four tens is a Mendicot, and winning every trick is a whitewash.
Trump (the host picks)
- Hidden (band hukum): the player after the dealer looks at their cards and hides one face down. Its suit is trump, but nobody else knows it. When you can't follow suit you may ask to open trump: the card goes back to its owner, and you must then play a trump if you have one.
- Cut (cut hukum): there's no trump to start with. The first time someone can't follow suit, the card they play sets trump for the rest of the hand.
Play
- The player after the dealer leads. Follow suit if you can.
- Highest trump wins, otherwise the highest card of the suit that was led. The winner leads next.
- The deal moves one seat along every hand.
Scoring
Win a hand: 1 point. Mendicot: 2. Whitewash: 3. The team with more points after the match wins.
