How to play Gadha Ladan

3 to 8 players, all 52 cards. Get rid of every card in your hand. The last player still holding cards is the Gadha (donkey). There is no trump, and Ace is high.

The deal and the first lead

All 52 cards are dealt out, so some players may have one card more. Whoever holds the A♠ leads it to start the round.

Following suit

  • Follow the suit that was led if you can.
  • If everyone follows, the trick is discarded: those cards are out of the game. The player with the highest card of the led suit leads next.

Thulla!

  • If you can't follow suit, play any card. That's a thulla (a hit). The trick stops right there: players after you don't play.
  • Whoever has played the highest card of the led suit so far picks up the whole trick into their hand, and then leads the next trick.
  • Tip: get rid of your big cards when you thulla, and try not to sit on top of a trick someone can hit.

Getting out

  • Run out of cards and you're safe. You drop out of the turn order. If your last card went into a trick someone else picked up, you're still safe.
  • If the player who should lead next is already out, the next player still holding cards leads.
  • The last player left holding cards is the Gadha and gets a letter: G, then A, D, H, A. (In the rare case that everyone left runs out on the same trick, whoever played the top card is the Gadha.)

Winning

Play 3, 5 or 7 rounds (the host picks). The player with the fewest letters wins. Ties share the crown. No money, no prizes, just bragging rights and someone being called a donkey.
