How to play Call Break

4 players, no teams, 52 cards. Every hand, call how many tricks you'll win, then win at least that many. Spades are always trump.

The deal

All 52 cards are dealt, 13 each. The deal moves one seat round the table every hand. A match is 5 hands by default (3 or 7 in the lobby).

Calling (bidding)

  • Starting left of the dealer and going round once, everyone calls how many tricks they'll win.
  • Calls go from 1 to 8 (the usual house rule; the host can allow up to 13). There's no restriction on the dealer.

Play

  • The player left of the dealer leads the first trick. The winner of each trick leads the next.
  • Follow suit if you can, and play higher than the best card of that suit on the table if you can (once someone has trumped, any card of the suit will do).
  • Can't follow? You must trump with a spade if you have one, and over-trump a spade already played if you can.
  • No cards of the suit and no spades: play anything.
  • The highest spade wins the trick; with no spades, the highest card of the suit led.

Scoring

  • Win at least your call: + your call, plus 0.1 for each extra trick. Call 4 and win 6: +4.2.
  • Fall short: minus your call. Call 4 and win 3: −4.
  • Highest total after the last hand wins.

Questions

How many players does Call Break need?

Four, each playing for themselves. Taash fills empty seats with bots, and you can practise solo.

Which suit is trump in Call Break?

Spades, always. The highest spade wins any trick it is played to.

How does bidding work in Call Break?

After the deal, starting left of the dealer, each player calls how many tricks they will win, from 1 to 8 (the host can allow up to 13). There is no restriction on the dealer.

What are the rules for playing a card?

Follow suit and play higher than the best card of that suit if you can. If you can’t follow, you must play a spade if you have one, over-trumping if you can. Otherwise play anything.

How is Call Break scored?

Win at least your call and you score your call plus 0.1 for each extra trick (call 4, win 6 = 4.2). Fall short and you lose your call (−4). The highest total after 5 hands wins.
